Set off on a 3-hour guided tour of the Pantheon, one of the most striking Roman temples in the capital of Italy, and discover its fascinating cupola while learning about its history.
Greet your guide in central Rome, in Largo di Torre Argentina, at 9:30am and head to Piazza della Rotonda, a 10-minute walk away.
Step inside the Pantheon, the best-preserved monument from Ancient Rome and follow your English-speaking guide through this magnificent converted church. Your guide will point out the various sections of the temple and you’ll be able to marvel at its breath-taking dome, which is larger than the Basilica of St Peter’s cupola in the Vatican.
Inside, look up at the ceiling of the building, or rather at the sky, since at the top of the Roman concrete dome is an oculus, a circular opening in the center of the dome, where the light comes through. Looking up at the opening when it is sunny is fascinating, but even more surprising when it rains or snows. Learn about the history of the Pantheon, commissioned by the emperor Hadrian on the site of an old temple built during the reign of Augustus.
Several historic figures are buried in this impressive temple including the painter Raphael, Victor Emmanuel II and Umberto I. Continue the tour by heading to the Palazzo Montecitorio, seat of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. Designed by the Italian architect Lorenzo Bernini, you’ll admire its impressive façade and you’ll be told about the history of the Egyptian obelisk, located just in front of the Palazzo and installed in 1789.
Continue the tour by walking along the bank of the River Tiber to the Ara Pacis Augustae altar, which was built to honor the return of Augustus to the city after being in Hispania and Gaul.
The tour will come to an end after visiting the Mausoleum of Augustus. In Ancient Rome, it was considered one of the most important burial chambers.
